Chhattisgarh was announced to be a separate state in November 2000. Bordering Madhya Pradesh in the northwest, Maharashtra in the east, Andhra Pradesh in the south and Orissa in the east, this is a hilly state with fertile land. Raipur is the capital of Chhattisgarh and the state contributes 15% of the steel production of the country. The major cities in Chhattisgarh are Raipur, Bilaspur, Bhilai, Durg, and Jagdalpur. The state is famous for the Chitrakot Waterfall, Palace Kawardha, and Laxman Temple.

Things to do in Chhattisgarh

There are several places to see in Chhattisgarh and they are discussed below in detail:

Raipur :-Kalchuri King Ram Chandra founded Raipur in the last quarter of the 14th century AD. Today, Raipur is developing fast and it is the biggest city of the state. The southern region of the city houses monasteries and temples, which are popular tourist attractions. The Maharajbandh River flows along the city, adding a picturesque look to the city. Other places of interest in and around Raipur are Barnawapara Sanctuary, Doodhadhari Monastery, and Sita Nadi Sanctuary.

Bilaspur :-Bilaspur attracts tourists from all over the world as it provides a spectrum of tourist attractions. From archeological sites to commercial centers, the city has everything for tourists. The varied landscape, museums, temples, and forts make this place ideal for tourism. Ratanpur and Malhar are the places where devotees come to pray. The statue of Rudrashiv (Lord Shiva) at Deorani is a landmark in itself. A visit to the local tiger reserve known as Achankmaar is truly exciting. Other places to visit in Bilaspur are Bhakra Dam, Markandeya Mandir, Vyas Cave, The New Township, Bahadurpur Fort, and Swarghat.

Bhilai :-Bhilai is famous for the largest steel plant in India. Here you can visit the Maitri Bagh, which is a zoo and a park. There are manmade lakes and one of them is used to supply water to the town. Established in 1959, the steel plant was a milestone towards India’s industrialization. On your trip to Bhilai make sure that you visit the steel plant. The places of worship here are Uwasaggharam Parshwa Teerth and Ganga Maiya Temple. Tandula is a picnic spot where you can enjoy with your friends and family, but it is better known for the dam built on the River Tandula.

Durg:-To the east of Seonath River, Durg is an urban agglomeration in Chhattisgarh. History says that earlier it was a part of "Dakshina Kosala” or "Southern Kosala”. Durg has been mentioned in the epic Ramayana as well. Durg is well known for its culture and heritage. The local cuisine is famous and dance forms like Pandwani narrates portions from Mahabharat. Devbaloda is a famous Shiva temple to visit. Other places of tourist interest include the Deorbijia Temple, Sheorinarayan Temple, Maitri Bagh, Prachin Kila, and Sati Chabutra.


Waterfalls in Chhattisgarh

Some of the waterfalls in Chhattisgarh are breathtaking such as Chitrakot Waterfall, Tiratgarh Waterfall, Mandawa Waterfall, Chitrashara Waterfall, Thamada Ghumar Waterfall, and Mendri Ghoomar Waterfall.

Palaces of Chhattisgarh

Earlier, 16 districts of Chhattisgarh were princely states and they are home to picturesque palaces. The palaces which you should visit are Bastar Palace, Kawardha Kanker Palace, and Palace Kawardha.

Temples of Chhattisgarh and other destinations:-The temples to visit in Chhattisgarh are the Deepadih Temple, Surguj Vishnu Mandir, Janjgir Champa Pithampur Shiv Mandir, and Janjgir Champa Madanpurgarh Devi Mandir. Other popular tourist destinations in this area are Kawardha, Bastar, Champaran, Dongargarh, Sheorianarayan, and Malhar.

Ancient Caves of Chhattisgarh:-There are a number of caves in Chhattisgarh, which are worth a visit and they are generally closed for the public during the monsoons. They open during Bastar Lokotsav and there are guides for help. Children below 8 and people above 60 are advised not to enter the caves for safety purpose. You can visit Kailash Gufa, Dandak Caves, and Kutumsar Cave in the state.

Cuisine of Chhattisgarh:-The delicacies of Chhattisgarh are jalebis, petha, and rakhia badi. The local people prefer tangy food and they generally prepare food with maize, wheat, and Jowar. Tribal recipes and non-tribal menus are also preferred by the local people and they are rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and iron. Other dishes that you can try here are lentils and bafauri.
